Eidos Includes Best DRM EVER In Batman: Arkham Asylum

Non-Buyer Beware

by Veggie Jackson

Forget about SecuROM, Eidos has a much better way to deter pirates.  It seems that the publisher included an intentional bug in the PC version of Batman: Arkham Asylum that renders the game unplayable for those who illegally obtain it.

The clever bug was discovered by a less-than-honest poster on the Batman: Arkham Asylum posts, who asked the forum about problems he was having with the game.

"Hi!  I've got a problem when it's time to use Batman's glide in the game. When I hold , like it's said to jump from one platform to another, Batman tries to open his wings again and again instead of gliding. So he fels down in a poisoning gas. If somebody could tel me, what should I do there. (sic all over the place)”

Nice butchering of the language, dude.  Since the PC version of the game hasn’t even been released yet, forum members immediately knew that he had pirated the game.  One member responded “Try buying the game.”  Then an Eidos forum moderator chimed in with the reason;

The problem you have encountered is a hook in the copy protection, to catch out people who try and download cracked versions of the game for free.  It's not a bug in the game's code, it's a bug in your moral code."

BURN!

I’m well aware that, probably by the end of the day, a crack will come out that negates this intentional bug, but you gotta respect Eidos for letting pirates install the game and start it up, only to find that it’s functionally crippled and unplayable.  Pirates shouldn’t just be stopped, they should be inconvenienced and frustrated, too.

    SquareEnix put some of these "bugs" in their DS releases, and they were actually pretty funny. One I remember distinctly was in Chrono Trigger After stepping into the first time portal, the pirated version of the game sits on an endless loop of the loading/wormhole screen. It just keeps going and going until you surrender. Totally awesome.

    Yeah, this is way funnier than actual DRM.

    Both of those are awesome. I remember when Spyro would say something along the lines you are playing a pirated version of this game.

    @Racoonacorn was that an admission of guilt?
