Fallout 3 Level Cap Won't Increase

Bethesda Rep Addresses Question

by Veggie Jackson

Choose your perks and skill upgrades carefully, Vault Dwellers, because once you hit level 30, that’s it. Bethesda's Jeff Gardiner has confirmed to MTV Multiplayer that Fallout 3’s level cap, originally set at twenty and raised to thirty by the “Broken Steel” expansion pack, will not be getting anther increase.

So why is thirty the limit?  According to Bethesda, it’s an issue of balancing.  Said Gardiner, "I know from the outside this seems like a fairly simple proposition, but doing this could unbalance the game in a variety of ways."  He went on to tout Fallout 3’s replayability as an alternate way for gamers to extend their play-time (as if we weren’t already on our ninth character), and hinted that the issue may be addressed in the future, stating, “I’m sure we'll [Bethesda] look into addressing these concerns in future games."

So if the level cap is set at 30, and that is the highest they can go for balancing reasons - why would it be different in future games? Are they admitting they didn't plan for difficulty scaling from the beginning of their project?

It seems like this game had some poor forethought in multiple areas - their choice of adding a "real" ending, their cap limit, even the order they releases the DLC packs. It all just seems a bit...amateur, which is strange from Bethesda.

True, but the game is still fantastic. They just wanted to end the story. Sure, the ending sucked, but points for having a game with a real ending instead of a fade to black and "to be continued."

Maybe because they are making Fallout 4 perhaps? Probably not, but a man can dream can't he?

@coop: I'm still not sure how I feel about the way they ended it, but I agree it was a ballsy move.

However, the fact that they went back and amended their choice removes all attributed ballsiness. It just seems as if they didn't fully think out their idea for the ending.

the game's way too easy at level 20... i'm at 26 now, and never run across a problem I can't deal with. I'm totally fine with 30. You'll basically be like a god anyway.

@00.19: Totally hear you man. You can waltz through the game once you power up enough and get sweet items. But, again, that is Bethesda's fault for not providing adequate difficulty scaling.

@Dom - You KNOW they are working on F4. They have to be. I'm sure they have been for a while now. they are probably starting to shift more resources to it now that DLC is wrapping up.

I love F3. So much. I'll proclaim myself a series fanboy and say that this game lived up to my expectations for the series. I just keep seeing these little hiccups in Bethesda's plans for the game and can't help but think they might have rushed and not fully thought out there strategy. Nothing against the game they created, let's just hope these little slip ups don't occur in F4 because it will only help the title/series.

Yeah but remember how fuckin scary it was the first time you encountered a Super Mutant. For the first 10 levels of the game those things fuckin DEMANDED my respect. They were not to be taken lightly. Avoid at all costs type shit.

Now. not so much. But still....
