Fight Night Champion Trailer Features Drama, Punching

More Drama Than Punching, Surprisingly

by Veggie Jackson

As a boxing fan, I’m glad to see Hollywood falling back in love with  “The Sweet Science.”  First, FX started showing teasers for their new show, Lights Out, which focuses on a former heavyweight champ and his comeback attempt.  Then, Mark Wahlberg’s biopic about “Irish” Mickey Ward, The Fighter, opened and started garnering critical acclaim and talk of Oscar consideration.  Now, a new trailer for yet another boxing movie has emerged.  I’m not familiar with any of the actors, but the movie is called Fight Night: Champion, and...  Wait, Fight Night?  It’s a game?!?!

It’ one of the most dramatic and cinematic trailers in gaming history, and for me , at least, it’s damn effective.  I love that EA is addressing the seedy, underhanded side of the business, and making an effort to make the career mode’s characters human, and worth caring about.  Previous Fight Night titles were impressive feats of game design and visual presentation, but featured bare-bones career modes that lacked any sense of drama or humanity.  Based on this trailer, that shouldn’t be a problem this time around.
