Game Developers Choice Awards Announced

The Awards That Matter

by Veggie Jackson

The 2010 Game Developers Conference is now over, which means it’s time for the annual Game Developers Choice Awards.  Each year, a group of developers vote for the awards, which “recognize and celebrate the creativity, artistry and technical genius of the finest developers and games created in the last year.”  This year, one game dominated the voting, winning 6 of the eleven categories, including Game of the Year.  Unsurprisingly, that game is Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

Sony’s and Naughty Dog’s blockbuster action-adventure sequel cleaned up this year, taking the prizes for best writing, best technology, best visual arts, and best audio, along with the coveted Game of the Year award.  Scribblenauts finished with two awards, taking home best handheld game and the “Innovation Award.”  The only other games to win awards were Batman: Arkham Asylum, for best game design, Torchlight, the best debut game, and Flower, the panel’s pick for best downloadable game.

In addition to the games, several gaming personalities were honored.  John Carmack, creator of Doom, received the Lifetime Achievemnent Award, Gabe Newell of Valve won the Pioneer Award, which “celebrates those individuals responsible for developing a vital technology or game design at a crucial juncture in video game history,” and the fellows from Penny Arcade walked away with the Ambassador Award.

"This year has seen some incredible titles across platforms and genres, big-budget blockbusters like Uncharted 2 and Batman: Arkham Asylum to addictive online games like Farmville all made for an amazing year in games," said Meggan Scavio, event director of the GDC, adding, "The winners at the Game Developers Choice Awards have exhibited that they can create compelling experiences that set the bar even higher for other developers to follow.  We'd like to thank all the winners and the nominees for their countless hours furthering the art of game creation, and crafting some awesome experiences for gamers the world over."

Best new social/online game is a new category for this year. I'll bet a lot of companies feel a little ripped off because this craze of online time-waster games started years ago. Line Rider? Snood? Peggle? Bejewled?!?
