Gearbox Calls Borderlands the Hottest New IP of 2009

If the year’s biggest selling game can be equated to the “Best Picture” Oscar, then the equivalent of the MTV Movie Awards Breakthrough Performance is the hottest selling new IP of the year. Except that people care about it. Gearbox believes that the award belongs to them this year, as they have declared Borderlands to be the fastest-selling new IP of the year.
Gearbox has determined that Borderlands has sold 418 thousand units in the month of October. While Prototype may have sold more copies in its first month (419.9 thousand), it had 21 days left in June when it launched, as opposed to only 9 days left in October when Borderlands launched. With video game sales numbers as cryptic and difficult to verify as they are, it’s hard to check this info against any numbers that mean anything, but given the buzz around the game, it’s safe to say that Gearbox is probably rght.
They may have made their announcement a bit early, however, as BioWare’s Dragon Age Origins has sold very well during its launch month as well. The Saboteur, out December 8, also has an outside shot at the title.
