Here's some news you probably already suspected; Gears of War 2 is doing pretty well.  Just how well?  Xbox Live’s Major Nelson is reporting on his blog that Gears 2 sold 2 million copies over its first weekend.  Nelson does not say whether this number represents US sales only, or also includes international sales.  The blog also states that 1.5 million gamers logged on to Xbox Live to play Gears 2 over the weekend, resulting in a total of 15 million hours of gameplay and 19 million achievements unlocked.  The 1.5 million at once sets a new record for concurrent users on the same game.

With extremely strong sales numbers, millions of satisfied gamers, and a Metacritic average of 93, Gears 2 is shaping up to be the monster hit everyone expected it to be.  Don’t be surprised at the end of the year when this game is listed right next to titles like GTA IV, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Fallout 3 as a game of the year candidate.
