Geoff Keighley Defends Mass Effect On Fox News

As Best He Can, All Things Considered

by Veggie Jackson

Could someone tell Fox News that the Kevin McCullough story is over?  They seem blissfully unaware that his information was just plain wrong, and are having a grand old time misinforming folks with it.  The “journalists” over at Fox News decided to jump all over the “new” “controversy” over the “explicit” sex scene in Mass Effect, and they brought in one expert and one “expert” to discuss the matter.  The expert is the host of Spike TV’s GameHead, Geoff Keighley, a respected and well-liked authority on gaming.  The other person pretending to know what they’re talking about is developmental psychologist and book salesperson, Ms. Cooper Lawrence.  The feature turns into nonsense almost immediately, with the moderator citing all sorts of false information about Mass Effect, and even the on-screen graphic incorrectly stating that the game contains “Full Graphic Nudity And Sex”.  Since when is 1/2 second of side-boob “full graphic nudity”?  From there, we get the pleasure of meeting Ms. Lawrence, who literally laughs at the Geoff’s inquiry as to whether or not she has played the game that she is supposedly an expert on.  Keighley does as good a job as can be expected defending the game, considering the 30 seconds or so he’s given to talk, but it pretty clear that no one involved was willing to hear what he had to say.  Here’s the video.

Other than the fact that Fox News did nothing but copy the woefully inaccurate Kevin McCullough after he’d recanted many of his statements, my biggest problem with this interview (and so many like it) is that detractors refuse to even reconsider their positions, even in the face of undeniable evidence that completely contradicts their points.  That, and the utter disgust and disdain shown by non-gamers toward gamers.  As of today, there have been 55 million current-gen (Wii, PS3, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS and PSP) game consoles sold in the US.  Fifty.  Five.  Million.  This isn’t a little niche thing, people.  In 20 years, the question “Do you play video games?” is likely to be as silly as asking “Do you listen to music?” but still, games are treated as the bastard child of media.  I don’t get it.  Sometimes, I just wish that everyone over the age of 45 would just die already so we can get on with living in the present.

Fox News (and CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, etc) care little for truth, accuracy, or the standards of good journalism. They care about eyeballs watching their broadcasts. They have no vested interest in seeing that the truth comes out. They are beholden to their shareholders to turn a profit. And the golden rule of broadcasting is: sex sells.

My favorite irony in the video is when the psychological "expert" expounds on the idea that video games set women up as "objects of desire" and "they don't show women valued for anything other than their sexuality." The humor/irony that is lost on her is that Fox News's female newsreaders are nothing but Barbie dolls that are registered Republican...

Fuck the media! (pardon my language) im getting sick and tired of them writing stories about how they feel, and not what actually is "real". It's really starting to bother me. it's not just games, its everything. I say lets stop watching tv, and keep gaming. then they'll have fifty five million less viewers. think about it, the media is the biggest propaganda machine ever. what ever they write, we watch.

As someone who works in marketing, I actually do deal with these larger entities (which I'm not going to name) and in my experience, everyone is largely behind the times. I once had to teach someone over the phone at [company name withheld] how to burn an information-only CD.

So this display of hullabaloo on outdated issues in the media does not surprise me one bit. I can't wait until they bash Craigslist personals.
