GV’s Freebies
Pirate Edition
A couple of weeks ago, GV’s Freebies was focused squarely on those mysterious, shadowy assassins the world knows as ninjas. In the interest of equal time (it is an election year, ya know), I thought it was only fair to give some attention to the other side. As you all know, ninjas hate pirates and pirates hate ninjas. That’s just nature at work. I mean, let’s look at the facts; ninjas are silent and stealthy, pirates are loud and unruly. Ninjas work mostly on land, pirates live at sea. Ninjas sneak in, quietly and efficiently dispatching their specific target, pirates run around burning and pillaging everything in site. Most importantly, ninjas carry extremely cool swords, pirates carry….slightly less cool swords. You can clearly see by these examples that the worlds of these two semi-mythical archetypes are not intended to cross over. Good thing these lists weren’t back to back. Here’s the best free pirate-based flash games for the week.
Pirate Chains
A challenging puzzle game in the spirit of Bejeweled, Pirate Chains tasks you with clearing rows or columns of like symbols to bring your pirate key in contact with your pirate treasure. It’ll make more sense when you play it.
Pirates
Pirates is an interesting mix of ship-to-ship and man-to-man combat. Sail the high seas launching cannonades at opposing ships, boarding enemy vessels and starting international conflicts. Deeper than most Flash games and definitely worth checking out.
Captain Jack Adventure
Similar to the previous game, Captain Jack Adventure is a bit simpler and a bit more action-oriented. A combination of keyboard and mouse controls allws you to bombard enemy ships as well as island settlements. Great music, decent gameplay.
Pirate Cove
A very basic shooter, Pirate Cove puts you in control of a cannon aimed at various pirate ships. Send them to Davey Jones’ locker or have your island overrun. No pressure or anything. This one’s harder than it should be.
Super Pirate Isle
Imagine Super Bomberman with pirates instead of, umm, bombermen. That’s about all there is to this one. A little glitchy at times, but enjoyable nonetheless.
Pirates of the Caribbean Online
Believe it or not, this free MMO from Disney is actually a decent, full-featured online rpg. All the traditional trappings of the genre are present, and there’s even versions for Mac and Windows available. It’s no World of Warcraft, but it’s not too far off.
Pirates Revenge
Pirates Revenge is a classic slots game with a buccaneer theme. It works just fine, I just wish you could bet larger amounts of gold.
Pirates
I know, I know. Another one just called “Pirates”. This one is completely different, though. It’s essentially a Worms clone, complete with all the wacky and hilarious weapons you’d expect. My favorite? The exploding barrel of garbage. It’s exactly what it sounds like.
