Harper Collins Brings 100 Classic Book Collection To DS
Finally, a Touch-Screen Version of Pride and Prejudice
It’s pretty much been agreed upon that everyone hates books. They’re slow, they only have two colors, there’s two pages of pop-in for every two pages you read, and they don’t even give you Xbox Achievements or PlayStation trophies. On the flip side, it seems that everyone loves the Nintendo DS. It has sold over 200 kajillion units, spawned multiple game franchises, and was recently elected Prime Minister of Belgium. So what happens when you combine these two polar opposites? Not much. Just the announcement that publishing giant Harper Collins will be bringing the 100 Classic Book Collection to Nintendo’s handheld platform.
The collection will feature classic titles from authors like Mark Twain, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Lewis Carrol, Jules Verne, Oscar Wilde, and a little-known English author by the name of William Shakespeare. It’s a good concept, and the list of classics is pretty impressive, but I wonder how successful a title like this can be. First off, I’m not sure how big the crossover audience is between DS players and avid readers, and more importantly, I can’t imagine reading a 400 page novel on a pair of 2-inch screens. Now if this were 100 Classic Choose-Your-Own-Adventure Book Collection, I’d be all over it. Take a look at the full list of books and let us know if you'd spend money on something like this.

I love books, but no way would I ever want to read one on the DS.
You know what? I'll buy it. Day one. Seriously. That Shakespeare is awesome.
Interestingly, these books are also available at this place called LIBRARIES. They're free, ubiquitous, and don't require battery recharges.
