Hasbro Drops Scrabulous Lawsuit

It's A Christmas Miracle!

by Veggie Jackson

Back in July, Hasbro, makers of the popular board game, Scrabble, filed suit against Jayant and Rajat Agarwalla for their Facebook application, Scrabulous.  The app was just a bit too similar to Scrabble (and a bit too popular) for Hasbro to not take notice.  Hasro was nice enough to wait until they had a Facebook app of their own to replace Scrabulous before demanding that it be pulled, but whereas Scrabulous drew close to a half a million users, Scrabble gets about 8 thousand.

Well, we're not 100% sure why, but Hasbro has withdrawn their lawsuit against RJ Softwares.  The Associated Press reports that on Friday, the toy makers decided not to pursue the case any further, instead reaching an undisclosed agreement with the brothers.  According to the AP story, "RJ Softwares, the Agarwalla brothers' company, said in a statement that it has agreed not to use the term "Scrabulous" and has made changes to different versions of the game it created after the lawsuit was filed..."

While it's nice to see this settled without actually going to court, it's really a shame that we'll probably never see Scrabulous again, at least not in its previous form.  For whatever reason, people loved it way more than they like Scrabble.  Hopefully, the Agarwalla brothers aren't done making apps that people love.  Boggle could use a good clone.  Whaddya say?
