Head Tracking Tech One Step Closer To Reality

Homebrewed VR Shooter Uses Next-Next Gen Technology

by Veggie Jackson

We’ve all seen the impressive work done by Mr. Johnny Lee.  His modification of the Wii sensor bar and WiiMote to make a truly 3D display has had gamers salivating for months about possible commercial implementations of the technology.  Today, a video by a group called Insight VR demonstrates how the technology might work in a full-on 3 shooting game.  The visuals are a bit on the 1982 side, and it’s easy to see that the game engine is something of a mess, but the concept is sound.  Have a look:

Very cool stuff here, in theory.  We know that Steven Spielberg’s upcoming Boom Blox for the Wii will feature some sort of head tracking technology, but there’s no indication that any shooters are in the works that will utilize the 3D method.  Let’s get moving on this, Nintendo!  We now know that it works, so there should be nothing holding back the inevitable flood of truly 3D action games.  Let’s just hope they have better level design than this one.
