Is OnLive Coming to Your iPhone?
Is OnLive Coming At All?

Gamers are skeptical of OnLive, the cloud-processing, digital-download-only, dark-sorcery-powered gaming platform. Most people thought the idea of a game console that streams gameplay from remote servers without lag was implausible, and that the technology simply wasn’t there. OnLive missing its intended 2009 launch date certainly didn’t help matters, either. Still, OnLive founder and CEO, Steve Perlman, has been nothing but optimistic about the platform’s future. Most recently, Perlman revealed that the service, already slated to bring streaming gameplay to TVs and PCs, may also feature cell phone support.
On Friday, Perlman posted on his blog about a recent Wedbush financial conference where he demoed the service’s connectivity with mobile phones. He was able to show the OnLive service simultaneously playing the same game on a TV, a computer, and two iPhones. For now, this is only a demo, as Perlman made clear that there is no launch date for the service on phones, and that the company lacks approval from phone manufacturers.
"While we’re thrilled about eventually bringing many new games to cell phone platforms, currently, games on OnLive are tuned for TVs and computers, so initially, it’s the community and social elements of OnLive that we’re most excited about on mobile devices.”
From day one, I’ve been one of the few gamers I know that has faith in the OnLive service. I have a feeling that the service may not run as smoothly as people want it to at first, and that stability issues may sink the service before it has a chance to deliver on its promises. iPhone connectivity could be a huge help, though, bringing out the more tech-savvy early adopters. I have my concerns about how console games will control on the iPhone, what with its lack of buttons, d-pads, and analog sticks, but if they can figure it out, and partner with Apple to deliver new games on the iPhone, it could be huge. That is, if the service actually ever comes out.
