Marvel/Gazillion Deal Details

In an update to last night’s report on Marvel signing a 10-year MMO deal with Gazillion Entertainment, VentureBeat has posted some additional details about the deal. Gazillion has given the Marvel MMO project to San Mateo, CA based Gargantuan Studios, who will be publishing the game, tentatively titled Marvel Universe, for PCs and unspecified consoles.
Despite Gazillion’s relatively low profile, they look to be a pretty prolific MMO publisher in the near future. Their 300+ employees are spread over four development studios, including the Washington-based Amazing Society, which is creating a kid-friendly MMO based on Marvel’s Super Hero Squad property, Net Devil, out of Colorado, who are working on LEGO Universe and the extremely promising Jumpgate Evolution, Slipgate Ironworks, responsible for an unannounced original MMO, and Gargantuan.
Upon first hearing this story, I assumed that this collaboration would end in ruin, failure, or at least microtransactions, but knowing that Gazillion is responsible for Jumpgate Evolution fills me with promise. Could we finally get the Marvel MMO so many of us have been waiting for since before the Xbox 360’s launch? Only time will tell, but at least the property is in good publishing hands. As for the developer, I was unable to find any information online about Gargantuan Studios, which isn’t a great sign. Anyone who knows anything about the company, please chime in and let us know just how optimistic we should be.
