Marvel Secures Trademark for Secret Wars Game
The One Where Spidey Got His Black Costume

The recent trend in Marvel video games has been to set the events in an insular reality that's unbound by the often labyrinthine continuity of Marvel's mainstream Universe. Usually, games end up as a mash-up of the classic Marvel Universe, the Ultimate Marvel Universe, and the movie universes, with elements taken from each to create a stand-alone reality. If Marvel's most recet trademark is any indication, however, they may be bucking that trend, and going with a game based on one of the classic MU's most memorable and beloved storylines, Secret Wars. While the trademark covers everything from "computer game discs," and "Interactive video games of virtual reality comprised of computer hardware for use with an external monitor and software,"(yeesh) to sunglasses and bicycle helmets, it's hard to not see this as preparation for a video game based on Secret Wars.
For the uninitiated, Secret Wars was a 1984 Marvel crossover event that took many of the company's most famos heroes and villains, and transported them to an artificial planet to do battle at the behest of the Beyonder, a nearly omnipotent extradimensional entity. The crossover resulted in several semi-permanent changes to the Marvel Universe, most notably Spider-Man's black costume, which eventually became the canniballistic villain, Venom. It also marked Marvel's first foray into small-scale action figures.
So what kind of game might Secret Wars be? A third entry in the Marvel Ultimate Alliance series would make sense, since the games have focused on a large cast of characters from across the many corners of the MU, but a fighting game, either 2D or 3D, would also make sense. So which would you rather see?
