Marvel Studios Head Teases Marvel Vs. Capcom 3

They Heard My Prayers! They Really heard Them!

by Veggie Jackson

Back in 1999, when Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 came out, I had this crazy dream of the Capcom characters being dropped and replaced by DC’s superheroes and villains.  Match-ups like Hulk vs. Superman, Captain America vs. Batman and Spider-Man vs.… ummm, Batman, all running on the exquisite MVC2 engine would have made for the most intense, fast-paced 2D fighter of all time.  Sadly, there are things called “licensed property rights,” and since DC and Marvel are bitter enemies, the dream match-up never happened.  Instead, we’re getting a Bizarro version of MVC2 in Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe.  Apparently, though, this odd pairing of licenses has sparked renewed interest in the long dead Vs. series on Marvel’s part.

In response to a fan question at Comic Con in San Diego, Marvel Studios Production President, Kevin Feige stated "Yes [a new Marvel vs. Capcom game is possible], and maybe sooner than you think."  Sounds like an unconfirmed confirmation to me.  I know that, at this point, it’s no more than a rumor, but I’m going to go ahead and celebrate the potentially good news.  The last game had 56 playable characters, so hopefully we can expect Capcom to add to the roster, especially since Capcom and Marvel have both introduced new, important characters since 19999, like The Sentry, Ronin and Viewtiful Joe.  There’s also the addition of Capcom’s new artistic style, which would look fantastic when applied to the spandex and leather of Marvel’s best.

I’ve been dying for a third iteration of the series since, well, since the second one came out, so this is just fantastic news for fanboys like me.  Let’s hope that Feige is right when he says “sooner than you think,” because I can’t wait to beat the living crap out of Mega Man with Venom.

I hope for the next game they'll answer my Prayers and Add Dante from Devil May Cry. ^_^ His Fighting Game Debut is long awaited. (Originally he was going to be on Soul Calibur 3 as a guest character but didn't make the Final Cut.)

Maybe they'll use retro Mega Man like Mega Man 9. Old school sprites and all. That'd be kinda cool.

@Johpin: That would be sweet, kinda like 'Toon Link. As long as they make sure all his moves stay true to his 8-bit stylings, of course.
