Modern Warfare 2 Leads 2009 in Illegal Downloads
Activision; Congratulations?

No shocker here; according to TorrentFreak, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was the most frequently pirated game of 2009. With over 4.1 million downloads of the PC version alone, and nearly 5 million downloads total, MW2’s number more than doubles that of last year’s most pirated title, Spore, and leads Sims 3, the second most pirated game of 2009, by almost 2 million downloads.
Taking into account all platforms, Prototype, Street Fighter IV, and Need for Speed: Shift round out the top five of the year. Overall, illegal downloads have more than doubled since last year, with PC titles dominating the download charts. Another shift from last year’s totals; all the top downloaded games were from 2009, unlike last year, where older titles filled up the top of the list.
Modern Warfare 2 made a ridiculous amount of money this year, selling over 15 million copies between all platforms, for an estimated $1 billion in total sales. Even more impressive is the fact that these numbers account for only two months of the year. Pirated copies accounted for approximately $245 million in lost revenue for Activision. Seeing how Activision seems to like money, this, no doubt, is causing them no shortage of botheration. What can be done about it? Only time will tell, but my guess is “not a damn thing.”
