In what was possibly the most unexpected announcement at their E3 press conference, Nintendo announced that a new Metroid game, tentatively entitled Metroid: Other M, will be coming to the Wii.

The game is coming out of a collaboration between Nintendo and Tecmo’s Team Ninja, famous for their Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden franchises.  While the teaser video showed plenty of footage of main character Samus Aran looking out of her visor from the traditional first-person perspective, there were also plenty of shots of Nintendo’s greatest space heroine in third-person, leaping and fighting like in a standard 3D action game, such as Ninja Gaiden.  There’s even a moment in the video where Samus does something we’ve NEVER seen her do before; talk.  Yes, it looks like after 23 years of silence, Samus will finally be heard.

While no specific details were given, Team Ninja’s involvement indicates a few things.  First off, we can expect a challenging action title with a mix of melee and ranged combat.  Secondly, Samus’ character and back-story will likely be more fleshed out than in previous Metroid games.  And finally, someone will need to figure out how to make the breastplate on her armor jiggle.

Gamervision will be bringing you any and all updates related to Metroid: Other M as soon as they’re available, so stay with us for all your E3 coverage.

This was not enough to wrangle me back in. I saw the beginning of the Team Ninja logo and thought "It would be outta sight if they were helping to develop a more mature Zelda!" But, alas, this was not the case. It would make perfect sense... have the team behind the best hacking/slashing/bouncing around like you have jumping beans in your ninja suit take over a game where previously only the hacking/slashing (and the occasional puzzle-solving) have been tackled. So much for Nintendo...

    Pants have been ruined.

It's another fresh take on Metroid, much like the Prime series. I'd have to say that Metroid is probably the Nintendo series that evolves the most with each new iteration.
