New PSP Model Planned?
Online Instructions Reveal Possible Redesign
For those that don’t know (like me before writing this,) there have been two versions of the Sony PSP – The 1000 and 2000 series. The 1000’s were the original, bricklike handhelds, and the 2000’s are the newer, redesigned models. Now the reason you might care about all this is that some eagle-eyed reader found a very interesting .GIF file on the online PSP instruction manual:
Now that image is blown up, but the message is clear: a PSP redesign is inevitable. Obviously, since this is the only indication of a third version of the once-popular-then-not-so-popular-now-getting-popular-again handheld, other than a suspicious file in the last firmware update, we have no hard info like release dates or features. An integrated cell phone would be nice, as would a second analog stick, so if you're listening, Sony, GIVE US THOSE THINGS! The PSP is supposed to have a 10-year life cycle, so this upgrade/replacement could be a ways off, but it’s interesting to see that they’re already gearing up for it. We'll keep you updated when blah blah blah...

Although I, too, don't doubt the inevitable replacement of the PSP I would have to agree that it's waaaaay off the radar as to when this replacement would happen. It'd be like replacing your PS2 with a PS3. The only difference is that it's something that's a much smaller scale and [might] have a slightly higher price point to start due to the obvious software and hardware upgrades.
I just hope they give us enough time to see what they have in store before we spend our money on it again. A second analog stick would be so worth it, too!
I love my slim but I'm ready for a new one. Dual analog would be cool but we'd have to wait for games that could use them. If the PS3 could remote play PS2 games then we'd be in biz.
