Nintendo Announces DS Download Service For Japan
Official service planned to curb piracy
Nintendo is collaborating with AM3 and Dai Nippon to bring DSvision, a download service for the DS handheld console, to the Japanese market. Users will be able to purchase the cartridge shaped adapter, which includes a 512 MB microSD card and a high speed USB adapter, in January. The download service, which will feature games, movies, music and comics, will launch two months later.
AM3, who produced the Game Boy Advance Movie Player, stated that there will be 300 downloads available at launch, with thousands more on the way. Future plans for the service include the ability to download content directly over the built-in WiFi.
This service is a response to the rampant use of DS piracy devices, like the Chinese-made R4 adapter, in Japan. Numerous websites provide free downloads of illegally copied games, and the readily available adapters allow users to play them using microSD cards. Whether the service helps to slow piracy or not remains to be seen. It's hard to believe that people will start paying for what they're getting now for free, but hey, iTunes is making money so what the hell.
