Nintendo DSi Sells Out in Japan in Four Days

Finally, Nintendo Sells A Few Consoles

by Veggie Jackson

When Nintendo announced its new handheld system, the DSi, many people wondered if gamers would accept the new system.  Its predecessor, the DS Lite, has achieved such market saturation that many feared that people would shy away from a new portable console.  Well, in Japan anyway, it’s not a problem.

In the first two days of the new handheld’s existence in Japan, 200,000 DSis were shipped to retailers, with a whopping 170,779 units actually selling to consumers.  The remainder of the 200,000 sold out within four days, and Nintendo is already promising another shipment of 100,000 units by November 7.  For comparison, the previous week saw the sale of 177,934 DS Lite units.  Keep in mind, that’s a seven-day figure as opposed to the DSi’s two-day total.

Apparently, Japan’s hunger for Nintendo handhelds is as strong as ever, and the DSi is being snatched up as quickly as people can get their hands on it.  Will this translate to success in North America and Europe, though?  Europeans tend to be very loyal to Sony, and many Americans lean towards Microsoft, but Nintendo’s products also sell well in both markets.  We’ll have to wait and see how the western markets react to a new handheld that so closely resembles the ones they’re still playing.

Daaaamn. I guess The Wii's got competition. Oh, right. That's Nintendo too... If Iwata and Miyamoto ever wanted to take over the world, now would be the time.
