Ohio Teen Found Guilty of Killing Parents

Video Game Addiction Defense Rejected

by Veggie Jackson

The Associated Press is reporting that Daniel Petric, the 17 year-old Ohio student who shot his parents, wounding his father and killing his mother, for not letting him play Halo 3, has been found guilty of aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder, and other charges today.

Petric’s attorneys did not deny that their client shot his parents, but attempted to argue that a video game addiction influenced him to do so.  Lorain County Common Pleas Judge James Burge rejected the defense, however, citing evidence of premeditation on Petric's part.

Despite his age, Petric was tried as an adult, and faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole.

I must say, I'm proud of Judge James Burge there. Let's hope that the attorney in question doesn't have dollar signs in his eyes, though, and try to push the video game addiction defense further.

Petric got what he deserved, I believe, and his family is stupid for wanting him home to "heal the wounds" from the incident.

I already posted this to my blog earlier today. I don't even consider this a loss in the gaming community anymore. I consider it a win on homicidal tendencies in today's youth. The only thing that this does add to, sadly enough, is the gaming world's violence issues. Those who are in pursuit of ending violence in video games might make this case a part of their portfolio.
