PETA Protests Circus Game

Oh, PETA...

by Veggie Jackson

PETA, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, has a new target; Take-Two Games.  The publisher is set to release a Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus game for the Wii, and the controversial animal rights group has launched a campaign to try and stop them from doing so.

For years, PETA has railed against the circus’ alleged mistreatment of animals, and now they’re taking their fight into the virtual world.  The organization has stated that they have informed Take-Two about Ringling Bros. “lengthy history of animal abuse and neglect," going so far as to show them a tape of undercover footage of cruelty to elephants and other circus animals.  Take-Two, however, has stated that they will be moving forward with the game.

As a result, PETA has set up a website that allows concerned people to send a message to Take-Two CEO Ben Feder asking him to disassociate themselves with the world-famous circus in favor of one that ”does not beat animals for entertainment."

Honestly, I’m not sure how I feel about this one.  PETA is undeniably irritating, and sometimes offensive in their methods, but, for the most part, it’s hard to argue with their agenda.  Ringling Bros., on the other hand, has brought joy and wonder to millions of children over the years, but it’s more than likely that they have, and probably still do abuse animals.  Regardless, any animals that are harmed in a Wii version of the circus will be comprised of polygons, so no harm no foul.  Then again, if lots of kids play the game, it may make circus attendance go up, providing more opportunity for anmal cruelty.  I just don’t know what to think.  Maybe some more of those NSFW “I’d Rather Be Naked Than Wear Fur” ads would help me make my decision.  Try Scarlett Johannsen.  That would definitely firm up my opinion….among other things.

this is just as ridiculous as groups that complain about violent video games causing children to commit crime. shooting someone in a video game does not mean you're going to run out, buy a gun, and suddenly go postal in the middle of the street. likewise, being cruel to animals in a video game doesn't mean you're going to run out and kick a puppy - and p.s. i'm pretty sure gameplay will not include an "abuse" mode.

A game is a work of fiction, right? Everybody knows this... well, except for members of PETA, I guess. They seriously have to take it down a notch. Next thing they'll have issues with will be nose-pickers; because they're killing off pollen that enters their nostrils. You know, ridiculous.

I hope the game has waggle animal whipping. Further, I hope there is a code that unlocks people in PETA t-shirts so you can whip them too.

This seems more like a fight for Child Services than PETA. Any animal cruelty present is only virtual, but parents subjecting their children to a game about going to the circus, well, that's real life abuse. And I, for one, am appalled.

I am sick and tired of Organizations putting their nose in the world of gaming. groups like PETA need to stay with what they know and thats saving the fucking animals.
