Rumor - PSP 2 Will Omit UMD Drive

Industry Insider Speaks

by Veggie Jackson

Apparently, Acclaim developer David Perry knows something we don’t.  An excited Perry wrote the following message on both his Facebook page and his Twitter account;

"I hear Sony FINALLY has the PSP 2. And thank goodness, they've removed the stupid battery-sucking UMD disc drive. I'm Excited!

There’s been plenty of talk recently about a new Sony handheld gaming device, but this is the first time we’re specifically hearing anything about a UMD-less model.  This would make sense since the UMD format has not exactly been embraced by gamers, as is evidenced by the millions of unsold $3 copies of Bad Boys II you’ll find at your local GameStop.

We have no idea where Perry is getting this information, so, for now, it remains only a rumor.  If he’s right, and the UMD drive is no more, I would assume that Sony would be switching to the memory stick for games and movies.  This begs the question; how will new PSPs play old PSP games?  This is just one of the many questions the community in general has about Sony’s handheld plans, and we’re hopeful that in the face of all these rumors, Sony has something official to tell us soon.

    I see Sony trying to pioneer direct download with the PSN. This could be very good or very bad, not sure. It's one thing to offer it as an option, but it's something else to omit discs entirely. Maybe it will be a second option. The PSP will still exist, but the PSP 2 will be more like the iPod Touch.

    I don't like it. It's too crazy. If they get rid of discs we will probably have a harder time hacking our psp's to get roms and emulators on them :(

    This begs the question; how will new PSPs play old PSP games?

    I know the answer: they won't.

    Sony's lack of backwards compatibility support in the newest PS3s shows pretty clearly that they want their back-catalog to stay on their back-consoles. Oh well.

    But contrary to my previous point, I give this rumor just as much credence as the last one, and the one before that, and the dozen before that.

    I wish people would stop salivating over the next psp and support the one that they already have. In case you didn't notice, psp game sales haven't been stellar. And in this economic climate, (ie. Sony layoffs and division closings) the PSP and all its descendants could pretty easily find themselves on the chopping block....

    i would love to support the PSP but everytime i think of buying one i just decide to buy some PS3 games instead. Maybe if i get a good tax refund i will pick up the PSP.
