Rumor: Splinter Cell, Prince of Persia PS2 Collections Headed to PS3

Ubisoft Joins the HD Remix Parade

by Veggie Jackson

Sony had to be extremely happy with their release of the God of War Collection on PS3.  Since they only needed to spruce up existing games instead of creating new ones, their development costs were minimal, and with well over a million copies shipped, the HD upgrades must have been quite profitable.  If a French Amazon listing is to be believed, Ubisoft may be looking to capitalize on two of their marquee franchises in a similar fashion.

Ubisoft has yet to comment, but Amazon's French site includes a listing for "Prince of Persia Trilogy" for PS3.  The listing for the Splinter Cell Trilogy seems to have been pulled, but PS3 fan-site TheSixthAxis.com has a screen grab of it.  Both titles are listed at €39.95, which probably equates to some amount of real money.

While the listings don't give any details other than the fact that the rumored trilogies will be on Blu-Ray, one would have to assume that these would be HD "remixes" of the PS2 originals, and not straight ports.  As a huge fan of the first PS2 Prince of Persia game, I'm extremely excited at the prospect of playing through it again, this time with all the modern bells and whistles we've come to expect from the PS3.  Hopefully, this rumor pans out (in future news: it did!), and Ubi puts as much care into their remakes as Sony did with Kratos' early stories.

The reason for the removal of PS2 Backward compatibility for the PS3 becomes more and more clear to me.... and Sony should burn for this really.
