Rumor: We’ll Be Paying For Final Fantasy XIII Demo

Well, You Might Be. I’m Not.

by Veggie Jackson

According to an article on FinalFantasyXIII.net, the demo for Final Fantasy XIII may be made available at retail.  The article, which is essentially a translation of an interview with Square’s director/character designer, Tetsuya Nomura, conducted by Dengeki PS3, a Japanese magazine.  If the translation is accurate, the interview reveals a few key things about the franchise’s future, including the fact that FF Agito XIII will be the last title of the three Fabula Nova Crystallis: Final Fantasy XIII titles to be released.  More importantly, though, is Nomura’s statement that the 90 minute demo may be made available for sale in game stores.  We already knew that the demo would be appearing as part of the Asian-release of the director’s edition DVD of Final Fantasy Advent Children, but to actually charge for it on its own?  Sounds kind of ridiculous to me.

For me, the release of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue was enough of an insult to gamers.  If Square Enix decides to go through with this, I believe that we, as concerned consumers, need to boycott the demo and refuse to spend a penny on what is essentially an advertisement for a $60 game. Would people pay $5 to go to the movies to watch the first half-hour of Righteous Kill?  I don’t think so.  In fact, I can’t imagine any market other than video games where this sort of behavior would be tolerated, and we shouldn’t allow ourselves to be taken advantage of like this.  I know that this hasn’t been confirmed yet, and it’s therefore still just a rumor, so perhaps my ire is premature, but they are at least considering the option, so letting Square Enix know in advance that this is unacceptable should be a high priority for gamers who care about being treated fairly by publishers.  Hopefully, Square Enix will come to their senses and scrap the plan.

yea screw this.. I mean i understand wanting to make money, but this is bad.. i will just wait, no need to pay for the demo

@ veggie, this is different than GT5: prologue because it has a lot more than a demo and will last you a lot longer than this Fantasy demo will

Yeah, this is total BS, and as much of a Final Fantasy fan as I am, no way am I paying for a demo, even if it is two hours long.

yeah this bothers me. games are expensive! they're hardly selling them at a loss. with the already inflated cost i don't think it's right to force consumers to pay an additional fee for something that is designed to whet appetites.

I agree. This is something that you would only see in gaming. The worst part is, people will definitely buy it, which in turn is just enabling game developers and publishers to do this more.

If anyone on this site purchases this demo, expect me to show up at your house and give you a severe talking to.

Man... again with the GT5:P hate. It's a solid game!

As far as the FFXIII news, as great as it might be to attempt a boycott, there are too many rabid fanboys (and girls) who will shell out 5, 10, or even more for anything resembling new gameplay.

well a boycott will never work sadly.. though i will personally boycott the demo..

Aren't trailers just another way of doing advertising?

GT5:P is a part of a game, released to retail shelves for a price. It's a smaller part of a bigger game. Is that the definition of a demo? Granted, it's a super-long demo (so was Viva Pinata!), but it's still a demo, in my eyes.

Wait. Viva Pinata was a super-long demo?

Took me a couple of hours, at least.
