Rumor: Xbox 360 Pro Going Away

Elite Price Drop Leaves No Room For Second Level Model

by Veggie Jackson

An image from an upcoming Meijer catalog is lending credence to the rumored phasing out of the Xbox 360 Pro model.  The catalog, due out August 30, lists the Elite model with a new lower price of $299.99, the current price of the Pro model.

This would leave only the $199.99 Arcade model, which comes with no hard drive, and the 120GB Elite model.  Microsoft has yet to comment on the price drop, so we don’t know if any other changes are forthcoming, such as a cheaper 120GB hard drive or the inclusion of a smaller drive for the Arcade model.  The timing of the ad seems to suggest that Microsoft plans on announcing the price drop at Gamescom, taking place from August 19-23.  Expect to hear about it 9 seconds after Sony announces their PS3 Slim.

With the launch of Games on Demand, it makes sense that MS would want to get the 120GB HDDs into as many homes as possible.
