Rumor: Xbox Adding Blu-ray Soon

Episode 273 In The Microsoft/Blu-ray Rumor Series

by Veggie Jackson

For some reason, Microsoft has been vehemently denying rumors that a Blu-ray player would be added to a future release of the Xbox 360 ever since the death of HD-DVD.  No matter how many times the story pops up, M$ is quick to squash it, citing their devotion to digital distribution.  Well, guess what, this one’s gonna be tough to deny.  According to the Economic Daily News, Pegatron, a subsidiary of ASUS, has won the order from Microsoft to add Blu-ray Disc drives for the Xbox 360.  Shipments of the drives are slated for delivery in Q3 2008.

It’s still just a rumor, but it’s one with some info to back it up.  If Microsoft can do this cheaply, it could be a huge help to their already successful gaming division, and could even take away some of the PS3’s momentum.  It could also alleviate the disc-space issues some developers have experienced with the 360’s current DVD format.  My prediction; we should hear an announcement at E3 that the 360 will be going Blu-ray.

If this (finally!) proves to be true, I'm really psyched.

    meh.

Microsoft is a giant baby that's still crying over their loss of a new format. These rumors are, to me, just rumors. Until it's either shown by some interview on LIVE or at E3 (or any conference where Microsoft will show off an Xbox360) I won't get my hopes up of a cheaper way to get bluray technology in my hands. Although I'd love to own both powerhouse systems, it's just not in the works until at least the holidays.
