Sony Reveals 2009 Lineup

Didn’t See That Coming

by Veggie Jackson

In a recent press release/Killzone 2 hype piece, Sony announced their PS3 lineup for the remainder of 2009, and there are definitely some surprises.

We fully expected to see games like inFamous and, obviously, MLB 09: The Show.  Heavy Rain and Uncharted 2 were a little less likely to be 09 releases, but certainly not out of the question.  But God of War III?  Who could have seen that coming?  The consensus seemed to be that we wouldn’t see Kratos until next year, but Sony has confirmed that the third installment will see store shelves this year.  And what about MAG; the Massive Action Game?  Sony announced the ambitious online action title last year at E3, but seemed prepared for a very long development cycle.  It seems hard to believe, but Sony has now confirmed that we’ll see the horribly named, 256-person shooter before the end of the year.

It seems like every year since 2007, analysts and gamers predict an upcoming “Year of the PlayStation.”  That hasn’t happened yet, but if massive titles like Killzone 2, God of War II and MAG do manage to meet their 2009 releases, this could be the year that proves Sony’s supporters right.

if God of War 3, Heavy Rain, Uncharted, MAG, Twisted Metal all hit in 2009 alongside Killzone 2, MLB 09 The Show,Infamous, the next Ratchet game, then its a good chance this will be the year of Sony unless Microsoft has some fairy magic up their sleeves.

Honestly, MS wouldn't need magic dust there buddy. In that PS3 list you have a small handful of titles.

Microsoft this year has Halo 3: Recon, Halo Wars, Mass Effect 2, Alan Wake, Ninja Blade, Huxley, and even MORE Fallout DLC. Not to mention a LionHead game as well.

Sorry, but I don't think this year will be for Sony. Or any year soon.

HA! Ninja Blade! How funny! And watch Huxley get pushed back again!

i listed 9 titles, you listed 6 so how is my list small?

to each their own, but when i start throwing out Uncharted, GoW 3 and Killzone 2 and you counter with a DLC pack, come on now buddy, lets be honest to ourselves...

i didn't even mention Gran Turismo 5 which could still make a 2009 release, yes it will most likely be pushed back but you never know or White Knight Chronicles and the biggest game of all Fat Princess :)

oh and while we are throwing out DLC packs, how about the Valkyria Chronicles DLC pack, i am sure that will hit in 2009

Both systems will have great games, there is no doubt and i know we will never see eye to eye but come on, you got to bring more to the table then that list you just posted.

Riphade: As much as I love both my systems... only three of those MS games you listed are truly proven franchises that are given sellers. Alan Wake, Ninja Blade, and more Fallout 3 DLC doesn't exactly scream out "Holy Shit!" to me.

Having said that, Killzone 2, GoWIII, and Uncharted are also the only three franchises I'd trust to sell well enough to make a dent for the PS3. It seems like a pretty fair fight this year (for once), and no matter what, gamers on both consoles can finally be equally as excited for gaming excellence.

.19, what do you think sells best out of the other three.. MAG, Heavy Rain or Infamous?

I know you didn't ask me, Voyou, but my guess; MAG.

I thought Alan Wake was still in production limbo and there was no official news on it's release date?

well i didnt veggie but anyone is free to answer the question :)

I honestly think Infamous sells the best. I think Heavy Rain will be awesome but will be a very unique experience that a lot of people will not give a chance. MAG will sell good but lacks the super hero that Infamous has and people love open world games.

voyou: yeah, i agree that inFamous will probably be the biggest seller, but I also think it'll be received as only an average game. from what we got to see in new york it looked good, but not incredible. i think that while not selling as many copies, heavy rain will be a game that sparks a lot of "love it or hate it" discussion. for a game like that, there never seems to be a middle ground, but i'm pretty sure i'm going to be in the "love it" crowd.

I could buy no games but Resident Evil 5 and God of War III this year, and I'd consider it an amazing year for gaming.

You're all missing the important fact: God of War III, MAG, and Heavy Rain will all be delayed until 2010.

And Riphade, Microsoft just called, they want you to stop defending them, your doing a terrible job.

i wouldnt be surprised one bit if all three of those did get delayed coop. MAG to me seems the most logical to get a 2010 release date because we have heard so very little about it really. I hope GoW3 and Heavy Rain hit this year though, it would be nice :)

.19, i know i will also be on the live it side of Heavy Rain.

The only thing I have to say about anything Sony claims is " seeing is believing". They make so many promises that they can't keep.
