Sony Trademarks PlayStation Arc in Japan

It's Not Quite Official, But...

by Veggie Jackson

Sony’s unofficial name for their motion controller just became a little more official.  Well, in Japan, at least; Siliconera has spotted a Japanese trademark application by Sony for the “Arc.”  Something tells me that an American trademark and a full announcement of the Arc can’t be far behind.

This trademark application marks the third bit of evidence to support the rumor that the previously nameless motion control wand will be called the “Arc;” Sony’s registration of the domain name, PlayStationArc.com, and the repeated offhanddropping of the name by Sony execs being the other two.  With GDC only a week away, it’s highly likely that the name will become official at the event.

I like the name.  It’s certainly more descriptive and fitting than “Natal,” and it does a good job of relaying the device’s purpose in the name without being to obvious about it.  I’m also extremely excited about the nearly limitless potential the device has as a gaming tool, and am hopeful that not only the Arc, but both motion control systems provide us with some inventive, fresh gaming concepts.  I’m not taking sides on this one.
