Square-Enix "Exploring the Possibility" of a Final Fantasy VII Remake

Sounds Much Better Than Last Week's "Not Happening"

by Veggie Jackson

In the history of gaming, there is perhaps no game that has been the subject of more remake speculation than Final Fantasy VII.  The original, released in 1997, sold almost 10 million copies for the PlayStation, and it’s a safe bet that about 9 million of those customers have been begging for a remake of the beloved RPG.  Despite this, Square-Enix has repeatedly squashed any rumors about a remake, making discouraging statements like “it's looking pretty unrealistic,” “it is very hard to make games on PlayStation 3 in the same style the games in that era had,” and "I don't believe this will happen for the time being."  According to Square-Enix CEO Yoichi Wada, though, the company may have had a change of heart.

“Right now we don’t have a clear direction, but many fans have requested we remake Final Fantasy VII,” said Yoichi Wada, President and CEO of Square Enix, during an interview with Siliconera at the Final Fantasy XIII launch party, adding, “We’re going to explore the possibility – whether or not we’re going to do it, if we’re going to do it, and the platform.”

It’s in no way a confirmation that they’ll actually make the game, but it does mark a pretty large departure from their earlier nay-saying statements.  The original game’s impressive sales on the PlayStation Network must be making it harder and harder for Square-Enix to resist the remake, and this may represent the first crack in Squenix’s armor.  Let’s hope that if and when they do decide to remake it, the question of “the platform” isn’t answered with “the PSP.”

I know I'm not alone in saying that this would be one of the greatest things that a company has done for its customers (clients, really, as there are so many that revisit for the next installment or new title from the developer) and will be very well received by the gaming community.

All gamers alike should embrace either side of the next few months with whatever news comes our way.

If by exploring the possibility, you mean logging on to any final fantasy forum site from the last 10 years and realizing how much money they could make, then yes, I'm sure they are definitely exploring the possibility.

On a second note i hope they do not make it a multi platform release the 360 does not in my opinion deserve a game of this quality.
