Third Party Xbox 360 Motion Sensitive Controller

Will the Darwin Supplant the Newton?

by Veggie Jackson

Over the last few months, we’ve been following the oft-denied rumors of an upcoming Microsoft-made motion-sensitive controller for the Xbox 360.  Still no confirmation on that, but now we know that at least SOMEONE is making a motion controller for the 360.  A Massachusetts-based company called Motus Games has created a unique controller for the 360 that looks kind of like the Wiimote’s big brother.  Have a look.

According to Motus, the controller, named the Darwin (not to be confused with the Newton,) does not use infrared technology like the Wiimote.  Instead, it relies on a GPS-like system, making it completely self-contained.  It’s also stackable, giving gamers multiple configurations for the somewhat lightsaber-ish controller, and completely wireless, meaning no left hand-right hand connection.  There’s a lot more info on Motus’ site, including some videos of the controller in action and an interactive explanation of the controller’s layout, that are definitely worth checking out.  No word on a retail release, or if Microsoft is even planning on licensing this thing, and, to be honest, I’m more than a bit confused about several aspects of the controller (where’s the second analog, why is it so big, what games will this work with,) but I’m still intrigued and hopeful for a motion-sensitive future for the Xbox 360.

Yeah, I've been thinking for a long time, "I want to play my 360, but I'm really interested in using an awkwardly shaped, uncomfortable controller!"
