Ubisoft CEO Clarifies 3D Avatar Info
Like Yorba Linda, It' Only For the Rich

Two weeks ago, Cameron confirmed that like the movie it’s based on, the upcoming Avatar game would be presented in full 3D. Well, Jim wasn’t exactly lying, per se, but he definitely left out some vital details. In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz last week, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot spoke about the game and clarified a bit. From the interview;
Q: How is it going to work on a practical level – are you going to ship stereoscopic glasses with the finished game?
Yves Guillemot: It's with glasses on a specific TV. I've seen it, it's amazing.
Q: So it's not something that is going to work on a normal TV?
Yves Guillemot: No. It doesn't work on normal TVs. It means we will see an evolution on the TV. They are already in Best Buy in the US. You can already buy these TVs.
Okay, so technically it will be in 3D, but only for owners of a select few TVs. Since they’re the only 3D-ready TVs currently on the market, we can assume that he’s talking about Samsung’s new line of high-end DLP sets and $200 3D glasses. A bit of quick math brings us to at least a $1,760 price tag to get the full 3D experience from Avatar. Small change to Mr. Cameron, but for most gamers, the 2D version will have to do. Guillemot also confirmed that the 3D mode will be entirely optional, and that us peasant folk will still be able to enjoy at least 2/3 of the alien-body-swapping action.
