UFC's Dana White "At War" With EA

Not The Ideal Group Of People To Have Angry At You

by Veggie Jackson

Dana White is an angry man.  He’s angry at EA, mostly, because they have dared to infringe on his territory by releasing their own mixed martial arts game.  Just how angry is he?  Said White, "I'm telling you straight-up, I'm at war with [EA] right now.”

Dana White launched a tirade against the publisher, stating that in the early days of UFC, White brought the property to EA in hopes of making a game.  In response to this, White claims that EA told him "You're not a real sport. We wouldn't touch this thing. We want nothing to do with this".  Now, however, UFC is a big-ticket sports league with a successful game of its own, and White sees EA’s launch of their own MMA title as an affront.

On its own, this is neither surprising nor egregious.  What is a bit more “Scum-baggy” is White’s statement that any UFC fighters that sign on with the game “won't be in the UFC."  This isn’t the first time White has raised eyebrows with his threats against employees; several months ago, he threatened to fire anyone who didn’t sign away all of their lifetime licensing rights to UFC.

It seems Dana White’s problem with EA can be summed up in one sentence by the UFC head - “EA doesn't give a [expletive] about mixed martial arts. They made that very clear."  I'm pretty sure that in that sentence, they censored the phrase "flying turkey sandwich."

you know, i love the UFC, and think that EA jumping on the MMA bandwagon this late was dumb on their part... they could have part of the sport's rise, instead they're trying to capitalize on the popularity. there's not a whole lot of fighters they can get for their game that will make it stand out, let alone worth purchasing.

that said, if there's a fighter that the UFC really wants that is in EA'S game, Dana will sign them. business is business, and if there's a guy who can make the Fertitas and the UFC some money, Dana White won't let the fact that they're in someone else's videogame stop him. when push comes to shove, money talks, and these comments will mean nothing.
