UK Courts Rule R4 Cards Illegal

Anothe Legal Victory for Nintendo

by Veggie Jackson

DS owners in the UK may soon have to do something unheard of; something so counter-intuitive and unnatural, that it may shake the very foundations of the British gaming scene.  Soon, British DS gamers may have to (gasp) actually buy their DS games!!!

Nintendo's international crusade against the R4 card, the piracy tool of choice for most dishonest DS players, has been successful in several countries, like Australia and the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom now joins that list.  Finding that the cards bypass the DS' security measures, a British high court has ruled that the R4 cards are now illegal to import, advertise, or sell in the UK.

Nintendo responded to the ruling in a written statement; "Nintendo promotes and fosters game development and creativity, and strongly supports the game developers who legitimately create new and innovative applications.  Nintendo initiates these actions not only on its own behalf, but also on behalf of over 1,400 video game-development companies that depend on legitimate sales of games for their survival."

While Nintendo has had success litigating against the R4 in several nations, their fight against the card i their home country hasn't gone as smoothly.  While a court injunction exists against the sale of the devices in Japan, they are still readily available.
