What’ Up With GTA 2?

That’s Right, I Said 2…

by Veggie Jackson

With the whole world focused on Niko’s American adventure in LC, it’s easy to ignore the GTA games of the past.  In fact, it’s almost impossible not to.  To go back to 2D, top-down gameplay when we’ve spent the last couple days in pedestrian-killing nirvana is practically unthinkable.  Perhaps looking back, however, is the best way to look forward.  Confused?  Perfect.

This is what I’m talking about.  The official site for GTA 2 is currently featuring two countdown clocks; one for May 22, and one for today, May 1.  To what they are counting down, I have no idea, but it could be something cool, like an announcement about DLC, new maps or missions, or even a new game extending the GTA 2 storyline.  To me, however, what seems most likely is that GTA 2 will be made available via Xbox Live soon.  With all the GTA-mania going around right now, who could blame Rocktar for cashing in when the opportunity is there?  I’m not saying I’ll buy it, but who could blame them.

We’ll keep checking the site to see what’s up in approximately 9 hours.

UPDATE - An intrepid gamer just noticed something; the countdowns aren't countdowns at all.  They're actually countups, and every time you visit the site, they reset to 9:38:00 and 11:38:00, respectively.  Might be a while before we know what this is all about.

GTA 2 XBLA would be nice, but it better have some improvements, considering you can get it for free legally on PC.

What the fuck is up with the rash of ubiquitous meaningless countdown clocks? Noob.com, then the Diablo fansite, now GTA. It's like, "Hey, let's make an announcement that we might be announcing something!"
