Who Will Capcom "Vs." Next?

Capcom Producer Speculates

by Veggie Jackson

The Nintendo World Store in New York held an early release event for Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom, and while most attendees were salivating over the prospect of Jun the Swan vs. Viewtiful Joe, the folks at Nintendoworldreport.com were busy interviewing important people and leaning important things; things like where Capcom would like to take the Vs. series next.

In the interview, Capcom producer Ryota Niitsuma spoke about where he’d like to go next with the beloved 2D fighting series, stating, “There are a whole lot of properties that I would like to work with, a whole lot of game developers I'd like to work with in America. I'd love to do something with Nintendo maybe, or Square Enix, maybe do something with them. That would be pretty cool. On the other end of the spectrum, something unrelated to video games like movies or TV, some sort of properties that involves something completely different.

The idea of Capcom Vs. Nintendo would be jaw-droppingly cool, and would likely sell about 10 million copies, but with the popularity of Nintendo’s Smash Bros. series, it seems unlikely to actually happen.  The same could be said for Square-Enix, who would probably want to save its characters for the possibility of another Dissidia game.  Then again, I never thought we’d see Mario and Sonic appear together, and we all know how that turned out.  Anything’s possible, but these two matchups seem unlikely.

Niitsuma’s comments about movie or TV characters simply open the floodgates for even more wild speculation about the next game, and we’re sure to hear rumors of everything from Capcom Vs. Star Trek to Capcom Vs. The Golden Girls.  As for the Western publishers he’d like to work with, there’s really only one with enough recognizable characters that would work in a fighting game, and that’s Activision.  Characters like Pitfall Harry, Earthworm Jim, Bomberman, Kain, Raziel, Rikimaru, Colton White, Karnov, Alex Mercer, and the brothers from Double Dragon would make excellent fighting game characters, and would fit perfectly with Capcom’s diverse cast of characters.  Personally, I find this possibility to be the most realistic, and probably one of the most interesting matchups possible.  With any luck, Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom will sell well in America, and we’ll get the opportunity to see who Capcom battles next.

Capcom vs. Midway is very unlikely to happen, considering how they went bankrupt.
Capcom vs DC, that'd be interesting, seeing as how we already saw what Marvel could do.

Capcom vs Namco as a fighting game is a no-brainer and a way to make up for the suck-ass RTS/RPG
