Wii will play DVD’s in 2008

Nintendo of Japan confirmed today that the uber-successful Wii console will be receiving a major update some time in 2008: The ability to play DVD’s. It is not yet known whether this will be a feature included in only new consoles or if it will be a software or firmware update for existing Wii’s as well. Multimedia company Cyberlink has revealed that their DVD playback technology has been licensed by Nintendo, so it is likely that the new functionality will run through a modified version of the PC DVD player, PowerDVD.

I never really thought that the Wii playing DVDs was all that important. These days most people have at least a console or two (or four, in my case) that can already play DVDs in addition to a standard DVD player. I'd rather Nintendo just focus on making some games instead, that's why I buy the systems in the first place.
I will be equal parts impressed and pissed off if they push a firmware update to my existing Wii. Because, if it has always had the ability to play DVDs, why go for so long without that support?
while that's true sarah that nintendo touted the wii as a gaming console in the begining and said they had no "need" for dvd players, perhaps a lot of families in japan only own the nintendo wii and because apartment space is so small in japan, it would allow a lot of families to put away an older dvd player and free up some room for a xbox 360 [hahaha..].
and don't forget all the 'non-gaming' channels kind of make it more of a multipurpose console over just a gaming console.
if this is an upgrade, awesome. if this is only on new consoles, color me pissed off.
I dont really care about dvd capabilities, I have so many ways to play them already. And although I'm not one to thumb my nose at new features, I can't see how they wouldnt have added this to start with if the old model Wii had the hardware.
I'm willing to bet that this is a software update that will most likely take the form of a Channel. Though I am also one to wonder if they had the technology, why go for so long without it.
i dont think it will be an update. they will have to moddify the wii somehow (put a new technology in it). i think it would be inpossible to get it through an update.
