Why I switched to 360: an open letter
Sorry Wii, it's over
by WiNG
Dear Nintendo,
How are you doing Ninty? It's been a long time since we talked. I know, I know, both our faults. But let's face it, you've seen this coming from a long way aways.
The dusty controllers. The unused channels. The neglected Miis found in mass graves after having committed suicide from months of neglect. Your goddamn system just isn't fun anymore.
Now, don't get me wrong. It's not like it wasn't ever fun. Yeah I had the obligatory Wii Sports party with my parents, girlfriend, pet rabbit, and crippled mentally challenged second cousin, but that just doesn't cut it anymore. I just can't enjoy a game that is basically a tech demo anymore.
Hey, don't start that shit. Yeah, I own Brawl and No More Heroes and Mario Galaxy and Zack and Wikipedia. I got DDR Hottest Party and more than $90 in Virtual Console and WiiWare games. But come on; the fact of that matter is that you haven't released anything that anyone over 20 should care about, and you've crippled third party development. But I should have expected as much.
I don't know what I was thinking to start with.
Maybe that you would... I dunno... encourage innovation, instead of shovelware and endless party games?
Maybe consider adopting an on-line system that is more impressive than the Dreamcast's?
Didja ever think to let third party devs know about your Wii Motion Plus?
How about that part where you could actually incoporate motion control in a way other than mindless flailing?
Or perhaps consider releasing more than 1-2 absolutely shit "classics" on Virtual Console each week?
And while I have a list running, how about getting a damn storage solution to solve the burgeoning VC/WW MB needs?
So, I hate to do this to you, but... we're through. You are going on eBay.
If you haven't guessed already, yeah, there is someone else.
She has real online play that doesn't gimp me to protect five year olds from imaginary predators.
She has awesome classic games that have been updated and allow online play.
She doesn't warn me how dangerous it is to play every goddamn time I hit the power button.
She's an XBox 360, and she is already plugged in to your TV.
Good Luck,
WiNG
PS: Fuck you, Nintendo.
PPS: I'm keeping the Dreamcast and Saturn over you, too.

You know, I've got a great gal for you. Her name is PS3. Huh? Huh?
Welcome to the club, Mr. Tran.
They haven't crippled third party development, third party developers have gotten lazy. This generation Nintendo finally opened the doors they had left closed, allowing anyone to create anything on their system. What do they get? Annubis II. That one isn't their fault. I do see what you mean though, but there is room for both systems in the world.
Oh, and Ninja, he LEFT Nintendo because of a lack of good games. It's like your telling him to ditch his coke addicted girlfriend and choose one who prefers heroin.
so you gave up a system that collects dust and has crap games for a system that will die on you whenever you get it too hot so that you can't play games until they return it.
good call :)
and Coop, its not like the 360 really has that many more great games than the PS3, I actually think they are pretty equal in terms of good to great games. Either system i think was a better choice than the wii.
Yeah, my 360 dies on me constantly! Oh wait, no, no it doesn't.
Welcome to live, Wing. It's about damn time.
your right sarah, my fault :)
Xbox 360: The console for social gamers. Good choice.
NINTENDO SUCKS! They refuse to grow up with their fan base and, therefore, people switch their consoles all the time.
The XBox360 was a good choice, by the way, but you might want to also consider picking up a PS3 somewhere along the line. The hardware will last longer and no RROD to worry about..., just firmware mistakes that brick the console (only happened once).
Every system out there is more entertaining than the Wii. He'd have been just as smart to dump it for a DS. But I support any purchase that puts either of the actual next-gen systems in someone's home.
Good point.
I expected Nintendo to redeem themselves at this years E3. They were gonna give me all the games I wanted and storage and online interface.
But then none of that happened. Why Nintendo? Why? That's like expecting a new mountain bike on Christmas morning, and then you wake up and all you get is a punch in the mouth....and wii music....
I can't love just one at a time. I've got space on my entertainment for all three of these beauties. I mean, sure, I can only love them one at a time, but I do make sure to spread the love around.
360 is the only choice, in my opinion.
Also realize you listed like 5 good games and over $90 in VC and WiiWare, that's more than enough to justify a purchase for most gamers. Throw in more WiiWare and Animal Crossing and this year looks nice as well. Remember, Nintendo sort-of threw the Wii into the "supplement" folder, supposed to sit next to a 360 or PS3, not replace it. That's why it is $250 new, and has been for years.
All you PS3 haters out there.....it's because she's black, isn't it?
I can't say I agree with most of this, considering my Wii has more than served its purpose in my opinion. No matter, different tastes, that's all there is to it I guess.
Also, I don't understand this single-console philosophy. I can't imagine one single console whose library is sufficient to meet a gamer's needs. I have a Wii and DS, and alternating between each console has kept more than busy; heck, I have quite a backlog I need to attend to. Maybe you could consider going Wii60?
My "single console philosophy" is this:
1. Electronics devalue extremely quickly.
2. I was unemployed for the last 5 months.
3. I already have 2 other consoles hooked up to TV (DC, SAT)
4. I refuse to further support Nintendo more than is necessary.
5. Time Value of Money (see #1)
Well done, man. Sometimes it's hard for us to move out of a bad situation, but you did it. We're all proud of you and wish you well with your new relationship. RIGHT, guys?
